Philippines: A Nation of Servants?

with 43 comments

Chip Tsao, the chinese journalist, who wrote the article “War at Home” was under sharp criticism for branding the Philippines as a “nation of servants”. His discriminatory remarks came in relation to the dispute over the Spratlys Islands. According to him, the Philippines, as a nation of servants, has no right to claim ownership of the island since “you don’t flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter”.

Here’s the article:

The War at Home

The Russians sank a Hong Kong freighter last month, killing the seven Chinese seamen on board. We can live with that—Lenin and Stalin were once the ideological mentors of all Chinese people. The Japanese planted a flag on Diàoyú Island. That’s no big problem—we Hong Kong Chinese love Japanese cartoons, Hello Kitty, and shopping in Shinjuku, let alone our round-the-clock obsession with karaoke.

But hold on—even the Filipinos? Manila has just claimed sovereignty over the scattered rocks in the South China Sea called the Spratly Islands, complete with a blatant threat from its congress to send gunboats to the South China Sea to defend the islands from China if necessary. This is beyond reproach. The reason: there are more than 130,000 Filipina maids working as $3,580-a-month cheap labor in Hong Kong. As a nation of servants, you don’t flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter.

As a patriotic Chinese man, the news has made my blood boil. I summoned Louisa, my domestic assistant who holds a degree in international politics from the University of Manila, hung a map on the wall, and gave her a harsh lecture. I sternly warned her that if she wants her wages increased next year, she had better tell every one of her compatriots in Statue Square on Sunday that the entirety of the Spratly Islands belongs to China.

Grimly, I told her that if war breaks out between the Philippines and China, I would have to end her employment and send her straight home, because I would not risk the crime of treason for sponsoring an enemy of the state by paying her to wash my toilet and clean my windows 16 hours a day. With that money, she would pay taxes to her government, and they would fund a navy to invade our motherland and deeply hurt my feelings.

Oh yes. The government of the Philippines would certainly be wrong if they think we Chinese are prepared to swallow their insult and sit back and lose a Falkland Islands War in the Far East. They may have Barack Obama and the hawkish American military behind them, but we have a hostage in each of our homes in the Mid-Levels or higher. Some of my friends told me they have already declared a state of emergency at home. Their maids have been made to shout “China, Madam/Sir” loudly whenever they hear the word “Spratly.” They say the indoctrination is working as wonderfully as when we used to shout, “Long live Chairman Mao!” at the sight of a portrait of our Great Leader during the Cultural Revolution. I’m not sure if that’s going a bit too far, at least for the time being.

Statement of Akbayan Rep. Risa Hontiveros:

“This disgusting, derogatory, and vile remark can only come from dim-witted and mediocre writing. His article should not have been published in a lifestyle magazine, it should been thrown immediately into a trash bin.”

“The magazine should apologize straight-away. The article reflects the kind of attitude that promote abuses against Filipina domestic workers. When you make fun of a particular group, you expose them to abuses. Wittingly or unwittingly, you end up supporting acts of intolerance and abuses.”

“As for Chip Tsao, he should find another profession. He should leave the Spratlys issue to the diplomats and writing to real writers because clearly he has neither competence nor talent in foreign affairs and in writing.”

“Filipina domestic workers should hold a one-day strike to tell the likes of Chip Tsao who’s the real master of the HK economy. If all Filipino workers in HK would strike, the HK economy would grind to a halt without us having to invade the territory.”

. “Domestic work is a decent job. It’s not just done by hired Filipina domestic workers, it has also been the function of mothers of all nationality, in HK and China and elsewhere. It should be treated with respect.”

Philippines, do you deserve this kind of insulting remarks?

  5. I absolutely believe that the Filipino people are one of the most educated people in the world. Most of the so called servants that he mentioned are college graduates (some are teachers, nurses, commerce graduates etc) They resort to working as domestic helpers and nannies abroad because of the lack of job opportunities and to support their loved ones at home. I think working as a domestic helper is an honest and noble job, rather doing illegal activities such as “pirating movies, putting melamine on milk and copying logos and styles of branded clothes and bags”

  6. If this is suppose to be a satire, it isn’t funny. If Mr. Tsao worships Chairman Mao then I suggest he gets rid of his freedom of the press and move back to mainland China. Funny that he can only afford a filipina maid since he cannot afford to hire one of his own. Mr. Tsao should redirect his anger on his traitorous compatriots that moved and now live in the Philippines for a better life than there in Hong Kong and China.

  7. Wow! Maybe you misspelt his name. maybe it’s “Cheap” not Chip! But really, how low can this Tsao go? If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that it can be solved. Prejudice is the child of ignorance and nothing is more terrible than this low life’s ignorance in action. At least he’s got enough guts to admit that even his Domestic Assistance has got higher education (and I bet dignity) than him. His views are obviously communist and definitely ARROGANT!!!

  10. so this is your ‘satirical writing’? well, Mr. Chip Tsao let me tell you that what’ve you written in you column is not satirical! are you idiot? you don’t know what satirical writing means! for your information, i’m a Journalism student here in Manila. i know what a satirical writing is. we can’t accept your apologies! the damage has been done. you already ruined the Filipinos’ dignity.

‘nation of servants’? yes. it’s true. without us “servants”, nobody would clean your filthy houses! nobody would fetch your children in school! nobody would cook your ‘for-animal-consumption’ dishes! can you ask an American to do that for you? NEVER.

WE ARE PROUD TO BE A FILIPINO. WE ARE PROUD TO BE A SERVANT. WE DO NOT STEAL ANYTHING FROM YOU JUST TO HAVE A FOOD IN OUR PLATES. WE WORK HARD, EVEN IF WE HAVE TO LEAVE OUR FAMILIES HERE IN PHILIPPINES JUST TO TAKE CARE OF OTHER PEOPLE. ISN’T IT HEROIC?

About the Spratlys, make sure you already read our Constitution about “OUR” territories. ever since, the Spratlys are OURS, not YOURS!

if you’re really a good journalist, you must know the Ethics of Journalism! did your professor in college taught you that?

oh, another thing. KNOW OUR HISTORY AND YOU WILL KNOW YOUR HIERARCHIAL PLACE DURING OUR ‘BARTER’ ERA and SPANISH ERA.

do not speak like your race didn’t have dirt bags on your back.

It’s realy embarrassing! Our Government officials must do something about this! And all concerns must cooperate! LETS BOYCOT! Don’t buy anything or any product comes from hongkong. Cancel all flights Or BAn all flights going to hongkong… Stop sending ofw to hongkong… I hope my poor english will be heard! I feel so bad about this thing!

  12. I like Hong Kong and it’s people. I have many Hong Kong friend that does not have the same opinion, but this arrogant bastard is archi-type of what they called in Hong Kong as Banana man, Yellow outside and white-colonial mentality inside. At some points he is disgusted of his fellow Chinese specially of the mainland people thinking they are all village people (xiang xia rean) and lacks poise that his retard mind has and at other point disgust of western people(Gweilo) attitudes towards Hongkong. He has utter confusion where to side, a damn dickless coward. I bet he has not tried to live in China and see what kind of press freedom and expression he can muster. I am a Filipino and I’ve traveled a lot of places here in China, I love China and have respected the people around me. Where his family came from, Guangxi is a nice place and I bet that bastard won’t even leave his home of fine things in Hong Kong to live in the Mainland where he says he pledge his allegiance and patriotism. He’s just another Banana Man easily mashed-up piece of garbage writer! We Filipinos are chocolate and sweet! Mabuhay ang manggawang Filipino as abroad!

  14. I would rather let the bastard insult our politicians than our kababayans in HK. Anyway, I think the first thing that should be done is to disallow this person to get quality service from a “servant” by virtue of being an unfit employer. Then put a camera in his house and watch him rot in his own feces.

  18. Again we should not banter with the same racial slurring as he did, we filipinos should not go down to his same frame of mind. The alternative to this is to talk constructively of what we can do to achieve a peaceful way of setting boundaries. We are peace loving people, we do not slur at other race instead we embrace them. I get that Chip Tsao write unwitty and unfunny sarcasm to stir opinion but if we rebutt his demeaning slurs with slurs to the Chinese it wold be pointless, let just put this guy into one box and label him as “piece of sh!t writer and separate them from the rest of the best journalist there is in Hongkong or around the world.

  20. Be glad we’ve been chosen..

The Master chooses ordinary pot rather than bright and shiny porcelain made from china. The Master chooses to be born in a manger rather than in palace surrounded by gold and silver. God choose poor rather than rich. In the Bible, Moses and Joseph are slave but intellectually gifted, honest, and god fearing… No comment on Chip Tsao. Be glad we’ve been chosen..

  21. chip tsao is a shame to the world of journalism, he simply does not know the basic principle of journalism that is to be responsible in making reports or articles. does he know that discrimination is strongly condemned internationally, i bet he dont, my piece of advice, he should read and go back to school to be reeducated and learn the principle of international law. he is simply an ignorant.

  26. For the longest time, we have always been humiliated. The Spaniards, the Americans, and the Japanese. Even now, there are the Chinese.

The reason why this is so, is that even though we have fought hard for our dignity, we always answer to some stronger nation. We have always been made to feel low, like animals.

I say, we must assert ourselves as a nation not to be trifled with. Why, even backward nations like Somalia and North Korea can be viewed with a sense of caution, because the world is afraid of them. Yet here we are, Filipinos who are angered by this Chip Tsao; If we wish to stop any further insults upon our sacred Fatherland, the Land where the martyrs to our nation such as Jose Rizal lay, we must make an example of this man.

Chip Tsao must die. He must die. It is not a question of morality, it is a question of respect. Had we been a nation of Muslims, and had Chip insulted our Islamic nature, I am certain that there would be blood.

Yet we are not. We are a nation so fixated with harmony that we end up compromising our own dignity as Filipinos who have a right to meet other nations eye to eye without being labeled in a petty manner.

Chip Tsao must die. Should his death provoke war from Communist China, I say BRING IT ON. We were headhunters. We killed Magellan. We survived Three superpowers who all passed on to become weak old men concerned with football and economics. We have an overpopulated nation who hunger for some semblance of equality with the West rather than being in its shadow. We must form an Army and prove that even the smallest spider can unleash venom that can destroy a man. Chip Tsao MUST DIE. His head must be displayed in public as a warning to those who think We are a nation of servants.

The Philippines is a young nation. It must prove itself to become a nation worth respecting and admiring. We must prove that we have the balls to stand up to any humiliation. Long live the Philippines! Death to Chip Tsao!

  32. He is the most hypocritic man of the century. The reason why he is only in hong kong is his experience and intelligence (if there is) cannot cope up in global competition. He is there hiding like a rat. And maybe he spent a lot of time writing the article to write the correct english grammar, or maybe he spent writing that article with his Filipina maid to teach him how to write it in English correctly.

  43. Provoking war is an -extremely bad judgement- exercised by any side that isn’t prepared to accept -casualties-.
The Spratly Islands issue have always been around since the dawn of trading among the South East Asian nations. Every government had since then staked it’s claim on it. Some, even dumb enough to resort to violence. When I use the word dumb, it’s with a reason. Sending out forces to secure these islands compromises military defense. Furthermore, this cuts out the offending nation from any diplomatic benefits with their neighboring governments. What we see here is the first glimpse of such a retaliation. More will follow, as long as this issue is pressed. But hey, every nation has too many mouths to feed. Perhaps this is a good way to “cleanse the blood”. I sincerely hope that fools would be made to pay the butcher’s bill in the ensuing chaos.
